Adopt, Don’t Shop!

Across the country, there are approximately 7.6 million animals spending their days locked up in shelters awaiting their forever home. The crazy thing is that’s not even the most shocking part. Out of these 7 million and counting pets, 2.7 million are euthanized for reasons of lack of space and funding.

Yet people still spend outrageous amounts of money to buy a pet from a breeder, when there are plenty in desperate need of a home at local shelters. You don’t need to spend a pretty penny when going to the shelters though; in fact you can adopt for as low as $50. These dogs and cats may not be all pure bred and raised to perfection, but they are more than capable of loving and making a forever friendship with you.

Adopting is also a way of protesting the horrible conditions of breeding places, like puppy mills. Puppy mills put female dogs under harsh breeding processes, lack space for the puppies to exercise, and put more of a focus on profit than care for the animals. There should be no exception for this kind of treatment and when you buy from these breeders you’re only making the problem grow by increasing their earnings.

So next time you’re considering adopting an adorable new member to your family, do the research and check out your local animal shelter. You just may find the perfect pet for you while you’re at it! #adoptdontshop

I got to volunteer at my community’s “Fido Fest” this weekend with so many adoptable dogs and booths to raise funding for these lovely pets.
